Burst and frozen pipe repairs in Traralgon

Burst or split water pipe in Traralgon? Turn off the water, stay clear of power points, what to tell the plumber, frost risk, repair methods and guide prices.

If a pipe has burst at your Traralgon home, turn the water off at the meter straight away, keep away from any water near power points or electrical fittings, and then contact a licensed plumber. Most visible bursts are repaired by cutting out the damaged length of pipe and joining in a new section, which is usually a short job once the plumber can reach it.

This website is a referral service. It does not send plumbers itself; it passes your details to up to three independent local plumbers. Each one that takes it decides on the repair and prices it, and the one you choose carries it out. The about page has more on how that works.

What should you do first when a pipe bursts?

Work through these steps in order:

  1. Turn off the water at the meter. The meter is often near the front boundary, and the stop tap or lever sits beside it. Turn it clockwise or across the pipe until it stops.
  2. Stay clear of power. If water is running near a power point, a light fitting or the switchboard, do not touch them. Switch off the main switch only if you can reach the board from a dry spot.
  3. Open a cold tap inside. This drains the remaining pressure out of the pipes.
  4. Turn off the hot water unit if the burst is on the hot side, using the isolation valve or the electrical switch.
  5. Take photos of the burst, the water damage and the meter reading.
  6. Move what you can away from the water and put towels or buckets under any drip through a ceiling.

If you cannot find or turn the meter tap, note that in your enquiry. A plumber may need to replace a seized stop tap as part of the job.

Why do pipes burst in Traralgon?

Pipes burst for a handful of reasons, and the cause tells the plumber what else to check.

Cause Where it shows up What it suggests
Frost on an exposed pipe Outside taps, pipes under raised houses, lines to tanks and sheds Other exposed pipes need lagging too
Old or corroded copper Pin holes or splits in older homes The rest of that run may be thin
Failed fitting or joint Behind a toilet, under a sink, at a hose tap Other fittings of the same age may follow
Ground movement or digging A wet patch or sinkhole in the yard The buried pipe may need relaying
High water pressure Repeat failures at taps and flexible hoses A pressure check may be needed

Frost is the cause that catches people out. The Bureau of Meteorology’s Latrobe Valley Airport climate table shows an average of 13.5 mornings a year at or below zero, and the lowest temperature on record there was minus 4.8 degrees on 3 July 2017. Water in a pipe expands as it freezes, and an exposed copper or plastic line can split overnight and only start leaking once it thaws later that morning. Lagging exposed pipes with foam insulation before winter is the simplest protection, and the winter plumbing checklist lists the other jobs worth doing before the cold sets in.

Is the burst your problem or Gippsland Water’s?

Gippsland Water’s page on trees and your pipes explains the split. Water pipes inside your property boundary are yours to maintain, so a burst there is a job for your own plumber at your cost. A leak or burst on the outside of the boundary is the water corporation’s to repair, so report it to Gippsland Water rather than booking a plumber. If water is bubbling up in the nature strip or the street, that is usually their side.

How are burst pipes repaired?

The method depends on the pipe material and where the break is.

Pipe Common repair Notes
Copper Cut out the split and solder or press fit a new length Older thin copper may need a longer section replaced
PEX or other plastic Cut out the damaged part and join with crimp or press fittings Check the fittings used match the existing pipe brand
Galvanised steel (older homes) Replace the section, often with copper or plastic Corroded galvanised lines often need a wider replacement
Flexible tap hoses Replace the hose Braided hoses under sinks and toilets wear out over time
Buried service pipe Dig, cut out and rejoin, or relay a new length Depth and location affect time and cost

A short repair in a reachable spot is usually straightforward. Pipes inside a wall, under a concrete slab or in a tight subfloor take longer, and the plumber may need to cut plasterboard to reach them. Patching plaster and painting afterwards is normally a separate job.

If the pipe that failed feeds a rainwater tank, a pump or an outside shed, mention it. Tank and pump plumbing is covered on the rainwater tanks service page.

What does a burst pipe repair cost?

What’s The Damage’s Melbourne plumber cost guide lists a burst pipe repair at $210 to $840 per job, including GST. That is a metropolitan guide. For local labour, The Quote Yard’s Gippsland plumber price tables list a licensed plumber in normal hours at $90 to $148 per hour. Neither figure is a quote. Access to the pipe, the material, how much needs replacing, travel to rural blocks and whether the call is outside normal hours all change the final price. Other local prices are in the plumbing cost guide.

What about insurance?

Policies differ, so read your own policy or ask your insurer what it covers. Whatever your cover, it helps to keep:

  • photos of the burst pipe and the damage, taken before anything is moved
  • the plumber’s invoice, which should say what failed and where
  • the damaged section of pipe, if the plumber can leave it with you
  • a water meter reading before and after the repair

An insurer may also ask what caused the failure, so ask the plumber to note the cause on the invoice.

What a careful plumber checks before leaving

  • the repaired joint holds under full mains pressure with no weeping
  • other exposed pipes on the same run, especially on the cold side of the house
  • the meter stop tap works properly, so you can turn the water off next time
  • the hot water unit has restarted correctly if it was isolated
  • any frost exposed lines have been lagged or flagged for lagging

If the meter keeps moving after the repair with every tap off, there may be a second leak you cannot see. That is a different job, covered on the leak detection service page.

A local note for rural blocks

Properties around Tyers and other semi rural parts of the district often have long buried lines from the meter or tank, pipes running to sheds and troughs, and taps far from the house. Those exposed and remote lines are the ones most likely to freeze and the hardest to find when they break. If your break is on a long run across a paddock or garden, you can request a burst pipe repair and describe the route of the pipe as best you know it.

Next step: what to tell the plumber about your burst pipe

Before a plumber sets out, they will want to know:

  • where the pipe is: outside wall, under the house, in a wall or ceiling, underground
  • the pipe material, if you can tell: copper, plastic, galvanised steel or a flexible hose
  • whether you have managed to turn the water off at the meter
  • photos of the break and the area around it
  • any damage to ceilings, floors or the switchboard area
  • whether it is the hot or cold side

Then send a burst pipe enquiry with your suburb, and an independent licensed plumber can say how and when they could repair it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use tape or a clamp to stop a burst pipe until a plumber arrives?

A repair clamp or self fusing tape can slow a small split on a pipe you can reach once the water is off, but it is a stopgap. Do not rely on it under full pressure or leave it in place long term. Tell the plumber what you have fitted so they can remove it and make a proper repair.

Should I pour hot water on a frozen pipe?

No. Boiling water can crack cold copper or soften plastic pipe. If a pipe is frozen but not split, turn the water off, open a tap and let it thaw gradually. A hair dryer on low held a short distance away is gentler. If you see a split once it thaws, keep the water off and contact a plumber.

How do I find my water meter and stop tap?

Look near the front of the property first, in a small box, pit or beside the path. The stop tap or lever is on the pipe beside it. Find it and check it turns before you need it, because a seized tap can be replaced as a small job.

Can I still use the toilet after turning the water off?

You can flush once using what is left in the cistern, and refill it with a bucket after that. Plumbing that drains to the sewer is not affected by turning the water supply off. Keep the supply off until the pipe has been repaired.

Will the plumber fix the ceiling or wall damaged by the water?

A plumber repairs the pipe. Damaged plaster, paint, insulation or flooring is usually a job for a plasterer, painter or builder, and it may be part of an insurance claim. Ask the plumber to note on the invoice where they had to cut in so the next trade knows what was done.
