Hot water system repairs and replacement in Traralgon
No hot water in Traralgon? Common faults with electric, gas and continuous flow units, safe checks, repair or replace, guide prices and what a plumber needs.
When a hot water system stops working in Traralgon, a licensed plumber first works out whether the fault is a part that can be replaced, such as a thermostat, element, relief valve or gas control, or a tank that has reached the end of its life. A tank leaking from its base is almost always a replacement. Most other faults on an electric storage, gas storage or continuous flow unit can be repaired if the unit is not too old and parts are still available.

This site does not repair hot water units. Your enquiry goes to an independent licensed plumber who looks at the job, gives you a price and carries out any repair under their own licence. More on how that works is on the about page.
What symptoms should you report?
You can describe most faults without opening anything up. Note which of these you are seeing:
- No hot water at all. On gas, the pilot or ignition may have failed; on electric, a circuit, thermostat or element may have failed.
- Lukewarm water, or it runs out quickly. Often a failed element or thermostat on electric units, or a burner problem on gas.
- Water pooling at the base of the tank. Usually the inner tank has rusted through.
- The relief valve on the side or top running all the time. Pressure or temperature is too high, or the valve itself has worn out.
- Banging, rumbling or popping noises. Sediment build up inside a storage tank is a common cause.
- Brown or rusty water from the hot taps only. The tank lining or sacrificial anode may be finished.
- A continuous flow unit showing an error code. Write the code down before you reset anything.
Also note when it started and anything that changed around that time, such as a power outage, a frost, a storm or a gas bottle running out.
What can you safely check yourself?
Keep it to these checks before calling a plumber:
- On gas, confirm the gas is on at the meter or bottle and that other gas appliances work.
- On a gas storage unit with a pilot, look through the viewing window to see if the pilot is lit, and follow the relighting steps printed on the unit or in the owner’s manual only.
- On electric, check the switchboard for a tripped hot water circuit and see if the off peak supply is on.
- On a continuous flow unit, check that the power point it plugs into is switched on.
Do not remove covers or panels on an electric unit, because live parts sit behind them. If a circuit trips again after you reset it, leave it off and tell the plumber. If you smell gas, leave the area and contact your gas emergency line from outside.
What details does the plumber need from the unit?
Every hot water system has a data label, usually on the front or side of the tank or the cover of a continuous flow unit. It shows the brand, model number, fuel type, capacity in litres and often the manufacture date. A clear photo of that label lets a plumber check part availability, warranty and the likely age of the unit before they drive out, and it often decides whether a repair is worth attempting.
Should you repair or replace?
| Situation | Usually | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tank leaking from the base or body | Replace | The inner tank cannot be patched |
| Relief valve dripping, tank otherwise sound | Repair | The valve is a standard replaceable part |
| Electric unit with no hot water, under about ten years old | Repair first | Element and thermostat are common parts |
| Gas pilot will not stay lit | Repair first | Thermocouple or gas control faults can often be fixed |
| Unit old, parts discontinued, several faults at once | Replace | Repairs may cost more than the unit has left in it |
| Continuous flow unit with a fault code | Depends on the code | Some codes are a sensor or fan, others a heat exchanger |
A good plumber explains which column your unit is in and why. If the answer is replace, you also have to decide what to replace it with, and that is where the fuel type matters.
What does a hot water replacement cost in Traralgon?
The Quote Yard’s Gippsland plumber price tables list a hot water system replaced, of any type, at $1,400 to $5,100 across the region. For comparison, What’s The Damage’s Melbourne plumber cost guide lists an electric storage system installed at $840 to $3,150; that is a metropolitan guide and is included only for context. Neither figure is a quote. The fuel, tank size, where the unit sits, whether new pipework or electrical work is needed and the brand you choose all shift the final price. Local labour rates for repairs are on the plumbing cost guide.
Gas, electric or heat pump: what changes in 2027?
From 1 March 2027 Victoria’s rules stop a gas water heater being installed in an existing home, so a gas unit that fails beyond repair after that date has to be replaced with an electric type. The full rule, its exceptions and how it applies to rentals are set out in the guide to gas hot water rules from 2027.
That rule does not stop you looking after what you already have. Energy Victoria’s page on existing residential buildings says existing gas appliances can continue to be used, maintained and repaired as usual. If your gas storage unit has a worn relief valve or a failed thermocouple, a repair is still allowed.
If you are replacing anyway, a heat pump is one electric option to consider. It heats water using warmth drawn from the outside air and needs its own siting checks for frost, noise and clearances. The heat pump hot water service page covers that install job, and a side by side of every system type, with running costs, is on the page that will compare hot water systems for Traralgon homes.
Which rules and certificates apply?
All hot water work in Victoria has to be done by a plumber registered or licensed with the Building and Plumbing Commission. Gas units carry an extra rule. The Commission’s compliance certificate page says a certificate is needed whenever a Type A gas appliance is installed, relocated or replaced, no matter the cost. Ask the plumber to confirm how that applies to your gas unit. Any plumbing job whose total value, counting labour, parts, the appliance and GST, goes above a set amount also needs one. A replacement electric unit will usually pass that amount. Ask for the certificate and keep it. Gas connections and gas line work beyond the water heater sit with the gas fitting service.
What will a careful plumber always do?
- check the relief valve and the tempering valve that limits hot water temperature at bathroom outlets
- test gas units for correct operation and leaks after any work on the gas side
- size a replacement to the household, not simply to the old tank
- remove and dispose of the old unit, or say clearly if that is extra
- issue a compliance certificate where the job requires one
A careful plumber will also refuse to plug a dripping relief valve or wind it shut. That valve is the safety release on a storage tank.
A local note for Traralgon homes
Frost is common in the valley over winter, and outdoor units and exposed pipes take the brunt of it. If your unit sits outside on a south wall or in a cold side passage, mention that in your enquiry. Homes across Traralgon have a mix of indoor gas storage tanks, outdoor electric units and roof mounted solar systems, and access to each changes how long the job takes. If you already know the unit is finished, you can request a hot water replacement quote and attach the label photo.
Next step: what to send with a hot water enquiry
To get a useful reply on the first contact, include:
- a clear photo of the data label on the unit
- the fuel type: mains gas, LPG bottles, electric or solar with a booster
- the tank size in litres if the label shows it
- where the unit sits: inside, outside, in the roof or under the house
- what changed: no hot water, leaking, noisy, dripping valve or an error code
- roughly how old the unit is, if you know
Then send a hot water enquiry with your suburb, and a local licensed plumber can tell you whether it is a repair or a replacement.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does a hot water system usually last?
Life span depends on the type, the water quality and how well the unit has been maintained. Storage tanks usually fail when the inner tank corrodes, and replacing the sacrificial anode can extend that. The manufacture date on the data label and the warranty period for your model give the plumber a starting point.
- Is a dripping relief valve on my hot water tank normal?
A small amount of water released while the tank heats can be normal for some systems. A valve that runs constantly, or a steady stream, is not. It can mean the valve is worn or the pressure or temperature is too high. Leave the valve alone and have a licensed plumber check it.
- Can I replace my hot water unit with the same size tank?
Often, but it is worth checking. The household may have changed since the old tank went in, and different system types are sized differently. A plumber will ask how many people live in the house and how hot water is used before recommending a size.
- My gas hot water unit has stopped. Can it still be repaired after March 2027?
Yes. Victoria's rules allow existing gas appliances to keep being used, maintained and repaired. The rule only applies when a gas water heater is replaced. If a repair is possible and sensible for the age of the unit, a licensed plumber can still carry it out.
- Do I need to be home when the plumber replaces the hot water unit?
Someone usually needs to be there to give access, confirm where the new unit goes and test the hot taps at the end. Arrange it with the plumber when you book. If the unit is in a locked area or behind a gate, let them know beforehand.
